When your energy is used up in the afternoon and dinner still feels an eternity away, the so-called afternoon slump often catches up with us. You reach for a chocolate bar, or you ignore that small hunger altogether only to drive home in a bad mood and quickly snack on some crisps before dinner.

To stop the thought of sweets coming up in the first place, it makes sense to plan in a small healthy snack from the outset. That way you can be sure you will get through the afternoon well and, in the best case, still make it to training in the evening.

Here are our favourite snacks, the kind you can plan into your day without much effort:

A glass of tomato juice

Tomato juice with salt and pepper does not only taste really good on a plane, it is also the perfect everyday snack. It fills you up and you can fit it in between two meetings without any trouble.

Apple with peanut butter

How many times have we carried that one apple around in our bag only to not eat it at the end of the day after all. That probably would not have happened with a tablespoon of peanut butter alongside. Peanut butter has plenty of protein and provides enough energy for the Jumping class in the evening. Delicious.

Hummus and olives

We tend to know olives and hummus as an aperitif or as a snack in a bar. But the chickpea puree really does make the perfect protein-rich basis for a healthy snack between meals. Olives supply healthy fats too and work as an uncomplicated afternoon snack.

Crispbread with cottage cheese

Cottage cheese has plenty of protein. Add a piece of cucumber and a few cherry tomatoes – tasty, filling and nourishing.

Popcorn

We mainly know popcorn from the cinema, where it is sold with a lot of fat and sugar and often in enormous portions. But you can also make it with little fat and simply add a little salt, then finish it with herbs and spices as you like. With microwave popcorn, do check which flavourings have been added and go for the sugar-free version.

A handful of almonds

Almonds not only contain healthy unsaturated fatty acids, they also supply protein, calcium and iron alongside fibre. A handful satisfies quick hunger and provides enough energy to get through the afternoon slump.

Buttermilk with berries

Simply put a few berries into buttermilk and you have the perfect snack for in between. A 200 ml glass has just 70 calories. Be careful with the sweetened versions from the chiller, they often contain far too much sugar. Better to make it yourself.

Vegetables with a dip

A few cherry tomatoes and a bit of cucumber are sliced in no time. Add a tasty herb quark and there you have a perfect snack of vitamins, fibre and protein. The quark provides a good basis for training in the evening, and if you want a little more variety, kohlrabi and carrots work just as well.

Once you have bridged the afternoon slump properly, the rest of the working day goes much better. And if you are not rushing home quite so hungry, finding the motivation to train comes much more easily too. So there is nothing standing in the way of a round of Jumping.
