All of us who enjoy jumping a lot are familiar with this: drenched in sweat, we empty our – at best – water at record speed. But is water really the best option? After all, we lose a lot of minerals as well as fluids when we sweat. In addition to sodium and potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iodine are lost through sweat – minerals that are particularly important for athletes as they contribute to normal muscle function.
It takes more than just water to compensate for this loss!
What about the countless sports drinks that can now be found everywhere? The selection ranges from vitamin water to isotonic sports drinks and much more and is intended to provide us with all the important minerals and nutrients that we lose during strenuous training. What could be so wrong with “vitamin water”?
A lot! This is because these drinks usually contain a lot of sugar and just as many preservatives that nobody needs. In addition to mineral water, coconut water or fruit spritzers are natural alternatives. However, the latter should be selected on the basis of their list of ingredients. Only unsweetened spritzers with no artificial additives are a sensible alternative to the somewhat tasteless mineral water. We therefore recommend organic spritzers for light or moderately strenuous sporting activities, which are made from purely natural ingredients and whose ingredients can be counted on one hand. These drinks are absolutely sufficient for recreational athletes.
The body only needs an additional supply of mineral salts such as magnesium or sodium and electrolytes during very strenuous physical activity lasting more than 60 minutes. For a natural alternative – instead of resorting to the sports drinks mentioned above – simply mix some mineral-rich salt, such as Himalayan salt or Celtic sea salt, into the drink of your choice.
And between you and me, even organic fruit spritzers win out over the usual sports drinks in terms of price. At this point, we would like to point out a passage that also inspired us to write this article: “Colored and sugared water, with flavoring, acidifiers and preservatives, cleverly marketed and sold at a higher price than a real organic spritzer – this is symbolic of how crazy the whole fitness industry has actually become. “*.
